FFR: HISTORY AND USES
FFR: HISTORY AND USES

William James said: Most people live, physically, intellectually, and morally, within a very restricted circle of their potentiality.

They make use of only a very small portion of their possible consciousness… as if a man were to become accustomed to using and moving only his little finger… We all have reserves of life that we don’t even dream of.

The truth is that the brain, even today, has much unknown potential that we don’t use to our advantage.

First Steps

Scientists have verified over the years that each mental state (fear, sadness, love, aggression…) is associated with specific electrical and chemical activity in the brain. This activity can be altered and controlled by external stimuli, including sounds, lights, electromagnetic fields, and physical movements. There are mechanical devices that can direct these stimuli to specific areas of the brain and produce specific mental states such as euphoria, recall of distant experiences, deep concentration, or intense creativity.

The first device of this type, known as the Synchro-Energizer S/E, was designed by Dr. Gorges, a psychiatrist and neurologist from Cleveland. After thirty years of research, it proved to be a powerful aid against stress, dramatically improving memory. A whole generation of new prototypes emerged afterward, including the popular MC2, which altered and controlled the individual’s physical and mental states, inducing an adjustable pattern through the brain.

The Cerebral Hemispheres

Upon discovering that the right and left hemispheres operate independently, scientists verified that we only use part of the brain, fluctuating from one hemisphere to the other depending on the activity we are performing. Each hemisphere receives the same sensory information but processes it differently, as if using two different computer programs.

HEMISPHERIC SYNCHRONIZATION
HEMISPHERIC SYNCHRONIZATION

The left hemisphere, dominant in almost everyone, encodes information verbally and uses logical and analytical processing to arrive at a reasonable conclusion.

And the right hemisphere, not dominant, performs a holistic synthesis through intuition, without using deductive reasoning. But the dominant hemisphere controls thought almost all the time. What would the results be, scientists wondered, if we used the full power of the mind simultaneously?

The answer came a decade later. Neurologists discovered that when people enter a meditative state (a state of extraordinary mental clarity accompanied by deep relaxation), the brain hemispheres function synchronously and harmoniously. This rare hyper-synchrony seems to explain the beneficial effects of meditation: advanced meditators think with their whole brain, and only they can reproduce this state at will.

The FFR Effect

Later came the discovery that certain electronic sound waves cause an equal-frequency response in brain waves. The brain responds to an audible signal by reproducing it, synchronizing itself to it. This effect is known as Frequency Following Response (FFR).

Also, this was revolutionary. Because brainwave frequencies (such as the well-known alpha waves) produce specific physical and mental states, one can put on headphones, turn a frequency selector dial, and instantly evoke vivid memories or a state of alertness and focus. By rhythmically combining sound and light, Dr. Gorges observed that the effect was amplified, producing rapid brain synchronization accompanied by a stream of bright and evocative images.

What the MC2 achieved was to harmonize all parts of the brain, not just the intuitive right hemisphere or the overstimulated and analytical left.

The result is mental clarity, increased effectiveness, and a state of well-being.

And the device combines sound and light frequencies through flashing lights and pulsating sounds. It interprets a brainwave rhythm, and the brain responds to the stimulus by creating a light and sound show. Ancient cultures and peoples used acoustic signals from musical instruments in their rituals, along with visual impulses from fire dances.

In India and China, monks placed their disciples between two bells that rang rhythmically and simultaneously directed beams of sunlight into their eyes using a system of mirrors.

A similar effect was found in drum rituals: the rhythm of the drums filled the air with sound waves of a specific frequency. Once finished, the shaman danced until his consciousness became one with the drums and he fell into a trance.

THOMAS BUDZYNSKI
THOMAS BUDZYNSKI

According to Dr. Roman Churuky, a physician at the North Jersey Developmental Center, and Dr. Thomas Budzynski, of the Behavioral Medicine Associates Clinic in Denver, even extraordinarily anxious and tense people can relax deeply with the machine: it acts as a tranquilizer for three or four days. Through the vivid quality of the images produced, Budzynski observed that people experienced a large number of visual “flashes” corresponding to childhood. All of this makes this type of device very useful for accessing early and forgotten memories, and a unique tool for psychotherapy and other forms of self-exploration. There is also evidence, according to the work of Gorges and other psychiatrists, that these devices can:

  • Improve learning ability.
  • Also improve learning ability.
  • Improve memory.
  • Increase creativity.
  • Raise IQ.
  • Help substance abusers, heavy drinkers, and chronic smokers break their habits.
  • Overcome stress and insomnia.
  • Strengthen the immune system.
  • Accelerate healing.
  • Help overcome fears and phobias.
  • Lead to more balanced behaviour.

Approvals and Certifications

These types of machines have been approved and listed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as learning and relaxation devices that comply with legally established safety standards.

Proven Effectiveness

People suffering from insomnia have used them to induce sleep. Executives frequently use them before brainstorming sessions to achieve greater creativity. Some users have reported experiencing sudden moments of inspiration and insight during the sessions: the eureka effect.

MENTAL TRAINING SESSION
MENTAL TRAINING SESSION

But it’s not a miracle; It seems to simply put the brain and body in the optimal state for a person to function at their full potential. Its effects have been studied for years at nine American universities, analyzing areas including stress reduction, substance abuse, accelerated learning and learning difficulties, pain reduction, athletic performance, and more. Besides not being habit-forming, its effects are progressive and cumulative.

The more it’s used, the longer these effects last. Another advantage is that after intensive training for some time, one can induce these different states of consciousness using only willpower. According to its inventor, Dr. Gorges, you can program yourself to get going in the morning. If you find yourself in a state of excitement or extreme stress, you can overcome it and relax deeply. It can replace a Martini or a tranquilizer, using the device to tune yourself in all sorts of directions. Some musicians use it to calm down after a performance and to relieve travel stress. Bob Weir, singer and guitarist of the Grateful Dead, declared after using it for two years that it’s a guaranteed way to change your mental state. Tina Turner and other celebrities also used them regularly.

What to Experience with Mind Trainers?

These machines are becoming popular worldwide. Thousands of people use them, including doctors, psychiatrists, and therapists.

One user commented: Driven by interest and curiosity, I travelled to Barcelona to experience a session. Then I entered a room and lay down on a comfortable sofa. After I put on glasses equipped with LEDs and headphones. I selected one of the computerized programs by pressing a button on the control panel. Also I was instructed to close my eyes and relax: “Breathe gently and harmoniously, forget your thoughts and worries, and enjoy the colours and sound,” I was told. And I immersed myself in a state of deep relaxation and immediately felt transported to a kaleidoscopic world of flashing lights.

Colourful geometric patterns seemed to come and go in every direction of my field of vision. Hypnotic, pulsating sounds overlapped with the music of ocean waves that seemed to glide alternately from one cerebral hemisphere to the other.

My brain began to experience a sublime synchronicity, sharing this relaxation with the rest of my body. Tension and stress left my neck, arms, and back with each new breath. I felt the same pleasant sensation one experiences when about to fall asleep.

This borderline, or hypnological, state is associated with the production of theta waves. I focused on my breathing and found it was almost imperceptible. After 45 minutes, After I returned to the real world, refreshed and invigorated. I then recalled the words of Hutchison, author of the book Megabrain, by a specialist on the subject:

“You will feel more lucid and alert.”

“Your memory will have increased significantly. Your ability to solve problems, think, and actively create will have expanded. The speed of message transmission between neurons will have accelerated. In fact, with repeated use, many of your neurons will have developed more dendrites and more synapses, or connections, between them.”

Our Brain Can Grow

For years, scientists maintained that brain size (weight, cortex thickness, and number of neurons) was hereditary. Recent discoveries have shown that certain external brain stimulations cause an increase in its size. This includes the size of neurons and the supporting cells of the nervous tissue. Furthermore, it has been proven that, with appropriate stimulation, the brain not only does not lose neurons over time, but continues to grow. This leads to increased intelligence and improved functioning.

THE BRAIN CAN GROW
THE BRAIN CAN GROW

Two psychologists from the University of California conducted an experiment with two groups of rats and then compared the results. The first group was kept in an environment with few external stimuli.

The second group was provided with a certain amount of stimulation: playmates, mazes, and cylinders. As expected, the second group performed better on intelligence tests.

But the most surprising finding was when the researchers measured and weighed the rats’ brains. The brains of the second group, the smarter rats, had grown and gained weight. New synapses had been created; the connections between neurons had multiplied. This study contradicts the hypothesis that our neurons die and our brains age.

Another important study related to brain-computer interfaces was conducted by Ferenc Sipos and Cary Howard, professors of learning techniques, with 42 student volunteers. The study was based on the premise that stress reduction improves learning ability. It included the use of the S/E (Syndrome/Electron), the first prototype from which the entire more modern generation of these devices is derived. Preliminary studies had suggested that the S/E improved learning by synchronizing and integrating the hemispheres. The experiment was a success with the participants, and many enthusiastically commented on how the device had improved their memory and relaxation abilities.

Learning Methods

Research conducted in Europe prior to the development of these machines demonstrates that the twilight state can be used as a learning tool. For example, the Russian tutoring method known as hypnopaedia uses the repetition of material over days or weeks. While the student is awake, they are mentally prepared to absorb the material during sleep. Greater learning occurs in light sleep than in deep sleep. As sleep deepens, brain processing changes, making it more difficult to assimilate complex verbal material.

SUGGESTOPEDIA
SUGGESTOPEDIA

In Bulgaria, scientist Lozanov uses suggestopedia with his students. He has them relax in comfortable chairs and focus their attention on classical music. The information to be learned is presented by an instructor, who modulates their voice according to the rhythm and tempo of the music.

The students are told to concentrate on the music, not on the instructor’s voice. Lozanov has demonstrated that this type of learning is qualitatively and quantitatively different from that which occurs in a normal waking state:

  • Suggestopedia learning is more intuitive and holistic.
  • Information is retained for longer than under normal waking conditions.
In the U.S., Elizabeth Philipos of Pepperdine University has adopted Lozanov’s technique for teaching foreign languages. In 120 hours of training, Bulgarian students assimilated 1,800 new words. They were able to use them in both spoken and written language.

A comparative study of this method with the traditional one showed interesting results. Suggestopedic students gained more while using only a third of the normal study time. The twilight state opens a direct pathway to the unconscious. It is the non-rational part of our brain, which we generally ignore. If we learn to open this pathway voluntarily, or with the help of machines, perhaps we can resolve conflicts between the conscious and unconscious mind. These conflicts create problems in many areas of our lives. The difficulty lies in the fact that most people don’t stay in this transition zone for very long.

How Can We Synchronize Our Brain?

When a person falls asleep, they transition from a state of relaxation. This state is characterized by the production of alpha brain waves and slow eye movement. Then, alpha waves disappear and are replaced by theta waves. All of this happens in approximately 5 to 10 minutes.

With the help of new brain machines, it is possible to maintain this state effortlessly.

By recreating the twilight state using devices, psychologists are achieving significant results. They are preparing people to accept affirmations and prompts for positive behavioral change.

Budzinski, with extensive clinical experience, describes the case of a patient. This patient suffered from extreme anxiety related to his wife’s divorce petition and her threats of suicide. He had overcome a drinking problem, but the new situation had pushed him back to drinking. Therapists created a recording to help him modify his irrational thoughts. These were contributing to a severe sense of guilt.

Three sessions using the device and the recording together helped him. They reduced his guilt and anxiety, decreasing his insomnia. They also helped him control his drinking problem. Three researchers from the Menninger Institute have studied the relationship between the twilight state and creativity. Through biofeedback, Alice and Elmer Green, along with Dale Walters, were the first to examine the relationship between the theta state and creativity. In an experiment, they recorded the brain waves of a physics professor, a psychiatrist, and a psychologist. They did this while each deliberately induced a special state associated with creative thinking.

Two of them showed high percentages of theta waves. They experienced the usual hallucinatory imagery when they reached the special state.

The third subject showed a slow alpha frequency between 9.5 and 8.3 Hz. He stated that he had reached a state of mental tranquillity without imagery, but had not fully reached the creative state.

How Do Brain Trainers Work?

Brain training machines use specific materials. These materials are carefully prepared and recorded on magnetic media to enhance their effect.

The recordings include specific verbal programs with positive affirmations, visualizations, suggestions, and inductions. They are designed to meet a wide range of user needs: prosperity, health, substance abuse recovery, optimism, and more. Recordings often incorporate relaxation music or special synthetic sounds.

ROBERT MONROE
ROBERT MONROE

The combination of neurological discoveries with cutting-edge technology opens a new field of exploration. This field holds unimaginable possibilities for developing human potential and consciousness.

One of the leading figures in the field of neurologically effective sound is Robert Monroe. He devised the HemySync method, which synchronizes the brain hemispheres using sound. Just as a crystal glass resonates when a pure tone is emitted, the brain resonates when it receives certain sound wave frequencies.

The stereo sounds in the recording can guide the brain into different states, such as relaxation and sleep. It’s simple: sound signals are sent separately to each ear using stereo headphones. For example, signals of 400 and 404 Hz. One ear hears only the 400 Hz signal, and the other hears the 404 Hz signal. But, since sounds combine within the brain, it hears a third signal of 4 Hz, the difference between the two sound impulses. This third signal is not an audible sound, but an electrical signal. It can only be created by the brain hemispheres acting in unison, and it can go unnoticed.

The result is that both hemispheres focus simultaneously on the same state of consciousness. This increases brain power.

Final Steps Towards Superbrain

After research and many tests, a conclusion has been reached. The use of light effects in brain trainers seemed to help achieve certain states of consciousness. The use of programs with slightly modified frequencies was tested in some of the latest brain trainer models. This was done without the use of light impulses, and it was found that their operation was equivalent.

Perhaps it took a little longer to reach the desired mental states. But it was discovered that this could be remedied by inducing visual atavism through other means. One example is the contemplation of hypnotic images.

This discovery enabled the creation of the Superbrain apps. These have allowed their users to carry the full potential of mental trainers in their pockets. Moreover, at a much more affordable price than the old devices.

The problems facing humanity and the planet demand a development of human consciousness. This development must overcome the process of confusion and destruction. Possibly, this technique will serve, this time, to accelerate and manifest to achieve the desired shift in consciousness. We hope Superbrain will help us achieve it.
